What does it mean Crecer, Criar or Criarse?

Si nos dicen que alguien “creció” (grew up) montando a caballo, ¿quieren decir que no “creció” mientras estaba desmontado? ¿Si alguien creció” en Nueva York, ¿deja de crecer cuando sale de esa ciudad? No, ¿verdad?.

La palabra apropiada en español es “criar” o “criarse” y, por supuesto, crecí mientras me criaba.

Por otro lado, fíjese también que nunca hablamos de un niño “malcrecido” sino “malcriado” (spoiled).

 Nosotros, para demostrar que nuestros padres nos “criaron” bien, debemos dejar lo de crecer para lo estrictamente físico, puesto que la “crianza” (upbringing) es lo que nos da la formación, la manera de ser, los principios éticos y morales, en tanto que el crecimiento solo nos da tamaño.

Recordemos esta frase: “Mis padres me criaron (brought me up) con mucho cariño, pero crecí (grew up) con salud, gracias a sus cuidados y a la buena alimentación que me dieron”
