Aprender español cada vez resulta más importante para los estadounidenses, por lo que la puesta en marcha de nuevos sistemas de aprendizaje en las escuelas, modernos e interactivos, pretende convertirse en un nuevo modelo para acercar el segundo idioma más hablado de EE.UU a las aulas.

La escuela pública EL Hayles de Washington ha sido la primera en implantar un nuevo programa en sus aulas para facilitar el aprendizaje de idiomas entre sus alumnos, mediante el cual los estudiantes pueden aprender español a través de su propio ordenador con el uso de software especializado.Hace apenas tres semanas que la escuela ha puesto en marcha este proyecto del que se benefician niños de casi todas las edades.
Y es que debido a la gran presencia hispana en Washington, cada vez es más necesario incluir un refuerzo en las escuelas públicas para ajustar la educación a las necesidades de cada alumno.

“Tenemos alumnos que son étnicamente latinos pero no saben nada de español, también que lo hablan pero no saben escribirlo, y otros que no hablan inglés en absoluto”, explicó a Efe la directora del centro, Jennie Nyles.

Este tipo de softwares permiten, en palabras de la profesora Teresa Danskey, que imparte clases de español a los alumnos de noveno grado, personalizar más el aprendizaje que con los métodos tradicionales y aunar en un sólo método la comprensión, la escritura, el conocimiento de vocabulario y la pronunciación.

Como explica la profesora, no solamente los estudiantes angloparlantes son los que necesitan ayuda con su español, también los hispanohablantes necesitan mejorar sus habilidades, sobre todo, cuando manejan el idioma hablado pero no el escrito.

Con este nuevo programa, los alumnos observan fotografías en sus ordenadores personales que luego tienen que describir mediante actividades de voz, en las que el software reconoce si la pronunciación es correcta; actividades que requieren que ellos escriban las frases o bien respondiendo a preguntas tipo test.

“Los métodos tradicionales son más grupales, pero esto es muy personal. El programa no avanza a la próxima actividad hasta que el alumno domina el concepto”, explicó Danskey.

El programa, que está llevando a cabo su experiencia piloto en EL Haynes, puede ser utilizado para desarrollarse en cualquier idioma, por lo que esta escuela pública quiere extender la herramienta para impartir también clases de árabe.

Según Nyles, estas actividades pueden duplicar, o incluso triplicar el tiempo que los niños emplean aprendiendo español.

“Es una oportunidad importante para lograr el entorno ideal para aprender un idioma ya que esta escuela no es bilingüe y deben aprender un segundo idioma lo más rápido posible”, añade Nyles.

Para los alumnos supone un método “más divertido” y más cómodo para aprender español, sobre todo, por las dificultades que puede acarrear la pronunciación del castellano para un angloparlante debido a los fonemas que ambos idiomas no comparten.

Kashmyere Hunter, una de las estudiantes del programa, cuenta que lo utiliza en casa, aunque también aprovecha algunos ratos por la mañana antes de que comiencen las clases, y emplea alrededor de 3 o 4 horas semanales.

“La palabra que más me cuesta pronunciar es bicicleta”, confesó a Efe Patrick Smith, estudiante de noveno grado en la escuela.

Smith todavía no entiende bien lo que sus compañeros de habla hispana comentan entre sí, pero cuenta que a través del software puede saber el significado de lo que dicen.

“Es muy divertido aprender otra lengua, pero a veces es muy difícil pronunciar algunas palabras”, insiste.
